Trying my hand on making a dress for Fashion Conceptualization class.
We were asked to transform a white t-shirt using inspiration from the designer assigned to you (I got Dior) and an artwork of choice (I chose Leeroy New’s Psychopomp’s Reef (you might have seen pictures of his installation from this entry. Let it be said that I have the hugest crush on Leeroy’s art so yes, I had to use his latest exhibit as one of my references.
I wanted to pay homage to (and possibly replicate) what I imagine was the very tedious task of sculpting Psychopomp’s Reef, from taking the tubes out, coiling them and fastening them together into tall towers and monster-like creatures. I tried recreating that process and incoporating that into making the bustier of my dress (so I basically killed myself by cutting three shirts up into tiny strips (first dyeing them), braiding them, coiling them, pinning them, and sewing them together). And since I got Dior, I just referenced the New Look with the tutu skirt (it looks much puffier and tutu-ish in real life; the picture above shows the dress when the tulle was still draped over).
Sure it took me a long-schmass time, but I think the labor was worth it. We’re shooting the rest of the shirts next week (hopefully this dress would fit me so I can have a picture with it) so I’ll be sure to post a picture up once I have it!
What do you think of my first dress?

Fashion Conceptualization sounds like it is going to be a fun (though very manual-intensive) class; but it must be great to be ‘dying’ making it and then finally having the final product in front of you. I find it quite interesting to hear about your inspirations and thought your translation of Leeroy New’s installation was lovely…especially how there are all these different colours in the coils, but when put together in the bustier they all blend very well together. Good job and I’m looking forward to seeing more garments from this class (:
So beautiful! Reminds me of candy and unicorns. I’d love to wear it!!!!
